During the break, children can experience a 'dip' in reading skills, and due to the disruption to education caused by Covid-19, it is more important than ever that they are encouraged to keep reading and learning.
North Tyneside Libraries is supporting the Reading Agency’s Winter Mini Reading Challenge. Schools can get involved by promoting the Challenge and encouraging children to sign up, either at home or as part of a school project.
How it works:
-
Children sign up at www.wintermini.org.uk. This goes live on Tues 1 December and runs until Friday 15 January 2021.
-
They read three books of their choice (or more!). These can be fiction and non-fiction books, comics, poetry, library books or books they have at home. E-books and e-audiobooks count too.
-
They then rate and review what they have read on the Winter Mini Challenge website to unlock rewards including a certificate and and a virtual badge.
The website features activities, competitions and recommendations for great winter reads. It also includes the Book Sorter, the Reading Agency’s unique database which has over 1.3 million peer-to-peer recommendations.
